Teacher, Teacher!

Matthew 7:24-27  “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.  Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.  But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.  When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

Being a student of Jesus isn’t really that difficult if we can read and obey. He even left us the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth, counsels us and provides us with the power needed to be bold witnesses for him in our daily lives. Here’s the clincher; no one wants to follow anymore. But Jesus was clear when he said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” He never intended us to lead, but in our following him, others will follow us.

We’re all going after the same thing; Jesus. We’re all running toward the same prize; Jesus. He was clear that in our pursuit of righteousness we are not to seek righteousness, but seek Him. We are not to seek money, but seek Him. We are not to seek love, but seek Him for He is Love. 2 Peter 1:3-4 says,Jesus has the power of God. And his power has given us everything we need to live a life devoted to God. We have these things because we know him. Jesus chose us by his glory and goodness, through which he also gave us the very great and rich gifts that he promised us. With these gifts you can share in being like God. And so you will escape the ruin that comes to people in the world because of the evil things they want.”

Because of the evil things they want. Wow! Our desire as Christians must be Jesus, not the things of this world. We must seek to be like Him in every sense of the word until our lives are lost in His life. Like the song goes, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.”

Jesus, I want to sit under your teaching, to know you in all of your fullness. There is just so much to learn and I haven’t always been a good student, but help me. Help me not be distracted by what goes on around me in my job, my family, my friends or my church. I just want you because in you, I have everything I need to make it. Help me to love like you, give like you, be like you.
