Do not yield to fear, for I am always near. Never turn your gaze from me, for I am your faithful God. I will infuse you with my strength and help you in every situation. I will hold you firmly with my victorious right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10 TPT
I don’t usually walk down memory lane, but the Lord has been showing me that sometimes the things in our past encourage us because as we look back, we realize it was the hand of God that brought us through.
It was in the early 80’s when the recession hit that Walt came home to say he had just got his pink slip from the bakery he had worked at for 12 years. They were closing the doors. We had found a cute little farm house to rent and moved out to a small town in Sunfield, Michigan a year earlier. Our oldest was in school and our youngest had just started developmental kindergarten.
We were happy for the most part but this really stressed us out. It felt like someone had knocked the wind out of our sails. Walt put his resume together and immediately began looking for work but no one was hiring. After trying for months, he began to entertain the idea of moving out of state and went as far as West Virginia in an attempt to find a job. Nothing!
We had found favor with our landlords and they really liked us, so they worked out a deal to give us 3 months free rent if we would paint the exterior of the house. It wasn’t something we’d done before and it was hard work, but we were grateful and God gave us strength.
I remember looking at our cupboards and they were empty. I’d filled 2 bowls with the last of the cereal for the girls, looked at the gallon of milk and noted I had just enough for that morning. I sent the girls off to school and made ready for a trip into Lansing to celebrate my cousins birthday. I began to think of a way to explain why I wasn’t eating that day. I’d just tell them I was fasting. I had no money for a card or a gift and I began to cry out, “Lord, are you even listening?”
Quickly I heard a reply, “Do you remember the level of the milk you poured on the girls cereal this morning? Did you notice it stayed the same? What you thought would be finished, you placed back in the refrigerator. I have not forgotten you nor will I ever fail you. Did I not say I would supply all your needs?” I began to worship and tell Him how thankful I was and repented for not noticing the details.
When I arrived at the restaurant, I saw one of my aunts getting out of her car. I ran up and gave her a hug. She had a plastic bag in her hand and said, “I’m not sure why I got this because I already got her a gift. Here, you can give it to her. And by the way, I’m buying your lunch today!”
I remember it like it was yesterday, so overwhelmed with joy and thankfulness. He not only met my need, but he met my wants. He’s that good of a Father. Over the course of the next 6 months, we had groceries delivered to our dining room table twice and one was a trunk load. We had a local church provide Christmas gifts for our girls and God provided Walt with a part-time job at a butcher shop down the road.
So I just want to encourage you that God’s got this. Regardless of what you’re going through, what’s up ahead will be better because God is in you now and in your future. We’ve had lean times and we’ve had times of plenty, still just as promised, He will never see the righteous forsaken or His seed begging bread.
Thank You Lord for always taking care of us and blessing us to the full till it overflows. We won’t forget what You’ve done for us nor will we forget what You’re still doing for us. You are faithful just as You promised! All glory to You, Father. I praise Your Holy Name.
Until Tomorrow,
Sandy G
