So He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and powerful wind was tearing out the mountains and breaking the rocks in pieces before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire, a sound of a gentle blowing. 1 Kings 19:11-12 NASB2020
Have you ever been desperately seeking the Lord for directions and hear nothing? Do you find yourself wondering if you’ve gone spiritually deaf? Perhaps even wondered if God moved on without you?
Let me assure you that God hasn’t left you behind nor have you lost your ability to hear His voice. As Elijah discovered, God has many different ways to get our attention. He can be loud and demonstrative, or gentle and soft spoken.
The most important point is learning what to do during the silence. Through all the seasons of my lifetime this one thing has consistently kept me tuned in for the answers so desperately needed.
Did you know that God knows what you have need of before you ask? Then why is important that we ask? Because God enjoys the fellowship with us. Just as Adam and Eve walked in daily communication with God, He created us for the same purpose.
I’ve formed the habit of talking with God. I tell Him about my day. I tell Him my concerns. I ask what He wants me to invest in. When I need something, I ask for it and trust that in the right timing, He will provide it.
Then I just enjoy being in His presence. Sometimes I tell Him how much I love Him. Sometimes I make up a song and laugh at how silly it sounds.
I remind myself of His covenant promises. Sometimes I read aloud Psalm 91 and then I just worship Him.
Sometimes the answers come in the most unusual and unexpected way, but they always come. Sometimes it’s much later than I expected but it always comes. I’ve even had my pastor answer questions in his message that only God knew about.
God has heard you. Don’t ever doubt that! I can still hear my mom singing, “Oh the answers on the way, this I know. Jesus said it, I believe it, and it’s so. My heavenly father knows my need before I pray, so I can rest assured the answers on the way.”
