And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” Mark 1:17
As I was reading the rest of this chapter, I began to ask what made these simple men leave their occupations, their families and just go follow Jesus? My observation was that Jesus didn’t just talk a good talk, He used the authority God gave Him.
Just after this verse, he went to the synagogue and began to teach. Verse 22 says, “They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”
With authority He cast out demons. With authority He healed the sick. With whose authority? The authority God gave Him and the same authority Jesus gave to us. Authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, to heal the sick and raise the dead.
We must resemble our Father who sent us. Some of us don’t have a clue as to what that looks like. We’ve married ourselves to the world and the things of the world. We’ve traded our authority for comfort. We’re more interested in reproducing more of the same and don’t understand why its not working.
In our churches, we promote agendas and programs designed to draw the lost. They want dependent followers but don’t teach them to plug into the power source and run in obedience to Gods Word. They long to control, not equip and send.
Perhaps if we went back to the very first thing Jesus said, ‘Follow me!’ we too would go into the world and change it. Not out of our relationship with man, but out of our relationship with God. Focus on Jesus, follow His example, He gave us authority and now it’s time to walk in it. The Spirit of God in us gives us the power to be the sons of God. His power is all the authority we need.
Are you tired of fishing but never catching anything? Become passionate pursuers of Jesus, follow His path of going and doing in the authority He gave you. Miracles will manifest on a daily basis if you’ll listen and obey.
It’s a great day for fishing!
