Matthew 7:7-8 ERV; “Continue to ask, and God will give to you. Continue to search, and you will find. Continue to knock, and the door will open for you. Yes, whoever continues to ask will receive. Whoever continues to look will find. And whoever continues to knock will have the door opened for them.”
My first thought here is, “How long do I continue?” Some of us have been at this for awhile now, asking, searching, knocking, but how long do we continue? Well, this verse says that if we continue knocking, the door will open for us. What’s it matter how long? I believe that we must never stop continuing. In other words, never give up on your promises. Never give up asking for more of God. Never quit searching for more truth. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will search for me, and when you search for me with all your heart, you will find me.” That sounds pretty promising to me.
I have to say that since I’ve really determined to search for truth in His Word, I’ve deeper in my intimacy with the Lord. It didn’t happen overnight, but it happened gradually, consistently knocking and knocking and knocking on the door of truth. Change can happen quickly and completely, but lasting change happens in degrees, without your knowledge of it happening. I mean, have you ever had someone say to you, “Wow, you’ve really changed!” You look the same, act the same, but there’s something different on the inside of you that reflects to the world around you. That’s because you’ve been knocking and the door has opened to you.
Some aren’t even aware that their prayers have been answered because they’re not looking anymore, they’ve found something more valuable to go after; Jesus. Some have been making disciples without even trying, they’re just focused on following after Jesus, pressing toward the finish line. Some have already written volumes of books in the form of journals, because they’ve found the Author and finisher of their faith. They’re not overwhelmed at the task before them because they’ve chosen to keep knocking.
Do you see yourself in here somewhere? Are you knocking in exhaustion, wondering if the door will ever open, or are you knocking with expectation, knowing the door has been opened? The door isn’t locked, it’s been opened to you, just turn the doorknob and go in. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus is the door. He’s the way to your answer. He is patiently waiting for the persistent knockers so that he can usher us into the presence of the Father.
Here I am Lord! I may seem annoying to some, but to you, I’m just persistently knocking. You have never turned me away from your presence but have always welcomed me in. How I love that about you. My eyes are on you and my ears are open to you. Speak to me today that I may take the bread you give and feed those around me. There is always room at your table and plenty of food to go around. Come on and join us today.
